Forcible Conversion Of Abducted Girls Confirms Boko Haram's Religious Agenda—CAN

Girls abducted by Boko Haram militants from Chibok on display -
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the forcible conversion to Islam of the Christians among the abducted Chibok schoolgirls, stating that the act was a confirmation that Boko Haram, a fringe Islamist sect, was waging a war against Christianity.
Yesterday, the Boko Haram terrorists posted a video clip online and disclosed that kidnapped Christian schoolgirls had been converted to Islam.
CAN’s national secretary, Reverend Musa Asake, reacted to the development earlier today. He described the purported conversion as unacceptable and called on the federal government and the international community to act fast.
According to him, the forcible conversion of the girls confirmed that the Boko Haram sect has a religious agenda, adding that it was now clear that the group was waging a war against Christians and Christianity.
The association also rejected demands by Boko Haram for the release of their detained members as a condition for freeing the girls, insisting that the Boko Haram members being detained were criminals who committed heinous crimes against humanity and that they should face the wrath of the law.
CAN also accused a Nigerian correspondent of the Cable News Network (CNN) of downplaying the fact that the majority of the abducted girls are Christians. “We condemn the forceful conversion of abducted Christian girls from Chibok into the Islamic fold by the Boko Haram terrorist group,” the CAN spokesman said.
Mr. Asake said, “Our Muslim brothers told us that Islam is not by compulsion,” adding that CAN was surprised that Boko Haram has forced Christian girls to convert.
“This is a confirmation that Boko Haram is waging a war against Christianity.  We are calling on the federal government and the international community to know that there is no ambiguity in what the Boko Haram actually wanted – they are waging a war against Christians and Christianity,” said CAN’s statement.
Mr. Asake added: “We also want to urge that the CNN reporter in Nigeria should be called to order because he is downplaying the reality of what is going on. [The] majority of the girls kidnapped are Christians, but he is downplaying this fact and misleading the world. We don’t know whose agenda he is executing but we are calling on him to let the world know the truth.
“Those girls are not Muslims and we are urging the terrorists to return them to their parents.”

Boko Haram attacks Nigerian village used by military in search for abducted girls

By Isha Sesay, Vladimir Duthiers and Chelsea J. Carter, CNN

May 8, 2014 -- Updated 0647 GMT (1447 HKT)

CNN anchor Isha Sesay will be live from Abuja on CNN International, Wednesday and Thursday at 5, 7, 8.30 and 9 p.m. CET.
Abuja, Nigeria (CNN) -- Boko Haram launched a grisly attack on a Nigerian village in an area that troops had been using as a base in the search for hundreds of schoolgirls abducted by the militant group, witnesses told CNN on Wednesday.

The hourslong assault on Gamboru Ngala that left at least 150 people dead, some of whom were burned alive, is the latest in a series of brazen attacks and abductions by Boko Haram, raising concern about whether the Nigerian government can retake control of the region from the entrenched terror group.

Word of the attack follows news that President Goodluck Jonathan, who has been under fire for his handling of the mass abduction, accepted U.S., British and Chinese offers of assistance to find the schoolgirls, officials with those governments said.

It's unclear what impact the latest attack could have on the international response to Nigeria's fight with Boko Haram, which so far has concentrated on helping the government rescue 276 schoolgirls abducted on April 14.

The assault on the village came after military troops deployed to the area were called to the border area near Chad, where reports -- later determined to be false -- surfaced that the schoolgirls had been found with Boko Haram militants, witnesses and local officials said.

CNN cannot independently confirm the report, and attempts Wednesday to contact Nigeria's military for comment were unsuccessful.

Indiscriminate killing

Witnesses described a well-coordinated attack that began shortly after 1:30 p.m. local time Monday at a busy outdoor market in Gamboru Ngala.

Wearing military uniforms, the militants arrived with three armored personnel carriers, they said.

They shouted "Allahu Akbar" -- "God is great" -- and opened up on the market, firing rocket-propelled grenades and tossing improvised explosive devices, witnesses said.

Some marketgoers tried to take shelter in shops only to be burned alive when the gunmen set fire to a number of the businesses, the witnesses said.

A few Nigerian soldiers who had been left behind at the village could not hold off the assault and were forced to flee, they said. Many sought safe haven in nearby Cameroon, they said.

The fighters also attacked the police station during the 12-hour assault, initially facing stiff resistance. They eventually used explosives to blow the roof off the building, witnesses said. Fourteen police officers were found dead inside, they said.

The final death toll could be closer to 300, Nigerian Sen. Ahmed Zanna told CNN.

Monday's bloody attack by Boko Haram militants, some of whom U.S. officials say have been trained by al Qaeda, follows a pattern of seeking revenge against anybody who is perceived to have provided aid to the Nigerian government.

International aid taking shape

News of the attack came as U.S. officials pressed ahead with plans to provide Nigeria with law enforcement assistance and military consultations, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

"Obviously, this is in the interest of the Nigerian government to accept every aspect of our assistance," she told reporters during a briefing Wednesday. "They conveyed that they were willing to do that yesterday and it continues to be in their interest to be as cooperative as possible."

U.S. officials will establish a joint coordination cell at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja where the goal will be to provide intelligence, investigations and hostage negotiation expertise, Psaki said. The cell will include U.S. military personnel, who are expected to arrive in Nigeria in the coming days, she said.

US offering help for kidnapped girls
The Pentagon has started planning for how it can help Nigeria, a senior U.S. military official told CNN. It's unlikely at this point that U.S. troops would be involved in operations, the officials said.
Britain is sending a small team of experts to complement the U.S. team, a spokesman for Prime Minister David Cameron said Wednesday. The spokesman didn't specify the nature of the team's expertise.
On behalf of China, Premier Li Keqiang offered satellite and intelligence services to aid in the search.
Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities offered a reward of about $310,000 on Wednesday for information leading to the rescue of the girls.
"While calling on the general public to be part of the solution to the present security challenge, the Police High Command also reassures all citizens that any information given would be treated anonymously and with utmost confidentiality," the Nigeria Police Force said in a statement.
According to accounts, armed members of Boko Haram overpowered security guards at an all-girls school in Chibok, yanked the girls out of bed and forced them into trucks. The convoy of trucks then disappeared into the dense forest bordering Cameroon.
The reward offer comes amid international outcry over the mass kidnapping in mid-April. The #BringBackOurGirls campaign initially began on Twitter. It quickly spread, with demonstrators taking to the streets over the weekend in major cities around the world to demand action.
Defending the response
Nigeria's President has been under enormous international pressure to step up efforts to rescue the girls after come after waiting three weeks to publicly acknowledge the kidnappings.
His administration, however, is defending its response -- even as details emerged this about a second mass kidnapping. At least eight girls between the ages of 12 and 15 were snatched Sunday night from the village of Warabe by Boko Haram, villagers said.
"The President and the government (are) not taking this as easy as people all over the world think," presidential spokesman Doyin Okupe said, adding that helicopters and airplanes have searched for the girls in 250 locations. More troops, he said, are on the way.
Despite the flurry of activity, the father of two of the schoolgirls taken by Boko Haram scoffed at the Nigerian government's response.
"We have never seen any military man there," said the father, who is not being identified for fear of reprisals by the government or Boko Haram.
"Had it been military men who went into the bush to rescue our daughters, we would have seen them."
Members of the U.S. Congress called for action, former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan called the abductions "abominable" and Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani children's rights activist shot in the head by the Taliban, spoke out, too.
"The girls in Nigeria are my sisters and it is my responsibility that I speak up for my sisters," Yousafzai told CNN's "Amanpour."
The U.S. first lady, Michelle Obama, was among the latest high-profile figures to take to Twitter about the girls' plight, tweeting a photo of herself holding a sign that read: #BringBackOurGirls.
"Our prayers are with the missing Nigerian girls and their families," she said in the post.
'I abducted your girls'
Boko Haram translates to "Western education is sin" in the local Hausa language, and the group has said its aim is to impose a stricter enforcement of Sharia law across Africa's most populous nation, which is split between a majority Muslim north and a mostly Christian south.
The United States has branded Boko Haram a terror organization and has put a $7 million bounty on the group's elusive leader, Abubakar Shekau.
A man claiming to be Shekau appeared in a video announcing he would sell his victims. The video was first obtained Monday by Agence-France Presse.
"I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market, by Allah," he said. "There is a market for selling humans. Allah says I should sell. He commands me to sell. I will sell women. I sell women."
More than 450,000 people, including celebrities and lawmakers, to date have signed a change.org petition that calls upon the world to act to save the girls. The petition calls on Jonathan and the government "to ensure all schools are safe places to learn, protected from attack."

GADHAFI'S SON, EX-OFFICIALS FACE CHARGES FROM 2011 UPRISING AT TRIAL

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- The second son of former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi appeared via a video link Sunday at his trial at a court in Tripoli, where he and dozens of former senior regime officials face charges for crimes they are accused of committing during the 2011 revolution.

Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, once his father's heir apparent, has been held in the western mountain city of Zintan by the militiamen who captured him in 2011. The group has refused to hand him over to the central government, citing security concerns and lawlessness in the capital.

The trial was held under tight security with roads leading to Tripoli's al-Hadba prison blocked off by security forces and gunmen positioned on the building's rooftop.

The judge read the charges against the defendants, which included the killing of protesters -- a crime punishable by a death sentence -- and other alleged crimes to try and suppress the 2011 uprising.
Saif al-Islam Gadhafi captured
Among the 23 defendants present at the hearing were Abdullah al-Senussi, the elder Gadhafi's brother-in-law and former spy chief, former Prime Minister al-Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi and the regime's head of foreign intelligence, Buzeid Durda. Eight other defendants held in the city of Misrata also appeared via video link at the trial.

After more than two years in prison, Senussi, who was extradited from Mauritania, appeared frail and had lost weight.

Gadhafi seemed relaxed and frequently smiled during the two-hour proceeding. In response to the judge's question on whether he had a lawyer, Gadhafi responded twice, saying, "I have God". He later said he did not have a lawyer, and the court ordered one to be appointed for him.

The International Criminal Court in the Hague indicted Gadhafi and Senussi on war crimes, but Libya refused to hand them over, arguing they had to face justice in their own country.

Although the international court granted Libya the right to try Senussi last year, his ICC-appointed lawyer was appealing the ruling.

Some defendants complained about not having enough access to their lawyers, and Senussi asked the court to allow foreign lawyers to represent him because Libyan lawyers, he said, were not able to do so.

Rights groups have raised concerns about Libya's ability to provide the defendants with a fair trial.

"The case of 30+ former Gadhafi officials has been problematic from a procedural point of view from the onset as some defendants, including Saif al-Islam Gadhafi and Abdullah Senussi, both held in isolation in different locations, still do not have access to a lawyer and were not able to review court documents," said Hanan Salah, a Libya researcher for Human Rights Watch. "In cases involving the death penalty, it is more important than ever to adhere to fair trial standards."

There have also been concerns about the use of the video link in this trial.

"Every defendant should have the right to communicate and consult without delay and in full confidentiality with their lawyers before and during a trial. The current arrangements in which some defendants are physically separated from the court and their lawyers cast doubt over respect for these rights and some defendants risk being mere spectators in their own trial," said Salah, who was observing Sunday's proceedings in Tripoli.

The judge adjourned the trial to May 11.

Two 34-Year-Old Aussies Are Latest Techies To Become Billionaires Thanks To Sky High Financing Round

Scott Farquhar and Mike Cannon-Brookes are Australia’s newest billionaires after their business software company Atlassian announced this week it had closed a financing round that valued the company at $3.3 billion. T. Rowe Price and Dragoneer Investment Capital paid $150 million, which amounts to a 4.6%  stake in Atlassian.
Farquhar and Cannon-Brookes, both 34, who founded the company twelve years ago, did not sell any shares in the latest round of funding, meaning the estimated 1/3 ownership stake each own in the company is worth about $1.1 billion. The selling shareholders in the deal include current and former employees, as well as Accel Partners, which invested $60 million in the company in 2010 at a valuation of $400 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.
What’s driving such a high valuation for the Australian software shop? A unique business model that has fostered rapid growth and a liquid balance sheet — the latter being a distinction many tech companies can’t claim. Atlassian specializes in developing online business software tools like JIRA, a product that helps companies manage the projects and workflow for their development and IT teams. Its services are used by more than 35,000 companies worldwide, including a broad array of heavyweights like BMW, American Airlines, Cisco, Facebook and Citigroup C -1.45%. It boasts positive cash flow and has done so for the past 10 years; its compound annual growth rate for the past five is 40%.
IN PICTURES: The World’s Youngest Billionaires: 31 Under 40
The two founders, both programmers, met while studying at the University of New South Wales in Sydney in the early 2000s. Each did internships prior to graduating and neither came away enamored with the corporate work environment. In 2002, they decided to break out on their own instead. Their first plan — third-party support for a company out of Sweden — was a bust. But the next gambit, crafting software that allows developers to track tasks and bugs in their projects, would eventually become JIRA. Their initial financing method? They opened a $10,000 line of credit on a credit card.
Unlike the model of behemoths like Oracle ORCL +1.29%, or even contemporaries like Workday WDAY -4.75% or Box, Atlassian chose to minimize costs by not investing in sales staff or marketing, focusing instead on research and development. It simply sold their competitively priced products on the website.
“We felt if we could sell something at a reasonable price and sell it on the internet then we’d be able to find a market there. And that’s what worked out,” Farquhar said.
Like many start-ups, early sales were from friends of friends and acquaintances. But the company knew it had broken through when, without solicitation or any human interaction, the credit card information for a purchase from American Airlines came through.
“Then we knew we could scale this,” Farquhar recalls.

Farquhar and Cannon-Brookes inside the San Francisco Atlassian office. Farquhar and Cannon-Brookes inside the San Francisco Atlassian office. (Credit: Atlassian)
It’s been 12 years of rapid growth since, and it now has a $200 million revenue run rate (current revenue levels projected over a whole year). The company  has main headquarters in Sydney and San Francisco as well as offices in Amsterdam, Yokohama and Manila. It plans to grow its 800-employee workforce by 30% by June, and its newest outpost will be in Austin, Texas, a city whose funky and quirky ethos meshes nicely with Atlassian’s.
Having a unified vision and culture from day one has helped guide the company’s precipitous growth path.
“From the beginning our goal was to build a long-term company. We want to build a company that will stand the test of time,” says Farquhar. “That’s why we spend a lot of time on company culture.”
Among the cultural mores Atlassian values include “Open Company, No Bullshit” — an emphasis on transparency — as well as a keen preoccupation with never screwing over customers. But perhaps the most important is “Be the Change You Seek,” which Farquhar says is key to building a company that will adapt and thrive 50 years from now.
“The way companies fail is they don’t make changes. People don’t feel empowered to make change,” says Farquhar.
The company has no near-term plans for an initial public offering, a luxury their rapid growth and positive cash flow affords them. But Farquhar says Atlassian will hit the stock exchanges down the road.
“It’s definitely in our future. There are very few companies that stand the test of time that aren’t public.”

Strange but True ! Woman Allegedly Turned into a Bird & Landed in a Gutter in Lagos*Photos*

2 Earlier on today, around 9am, this woman pictured above, who allegedly confessed to being a witch, was rescued from a gutter she was trapped in around Abalti Barracks, Ojuelegba in Surulere, Lagos.
According to reports, a passerby had noticed someone stretching out her hand from a very small hole in a 6ft deep gutter just in front of the Army Barracks and calling out for help. The passerby quickly ran into the Army barracks to get help.

Within minutes, a crowd gathered with people saying all sort of things about the lady inside the gutter and how she got trapped in it. Some said she’s a witch, that she went for her meeting transformed as a
bird. Only to end up in the covered gutter after she fell uncontrollably as a bird from the sky. That it was inside the drainage she now transformed back into her human form. Some others said she was on her way from Oshogbo and got sucked in the gutter, and so on.

When the woman was asked questions like ‘What are you doing inside the gutter?’ she replied, weeping ”Please I need water, help me”.

A senior officer of the Nigerian Army reportedly asked the soldiers to get her out, a welder around the environment was called in and she was finally brought out by a good Samaritan who entered the gutter to help her out.
She was brought out naked, covered up and then she said:

My name is Amudat Jimoh, It was God that sent me here, He (GOD) said I should confess my sins so that I don’t die, please I need water to drink, help me, I don’t know how I found myself here, please help me..
A Lagos State ambulance arrived and she was taken to away for proper medical attention.

Egypt court sentences hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death

By Marie-Louise Gumuchian and Sarah Sirgany, CNN
April 28, 2014 -- Updated 1605 GMT (0005 HKT)

CNN) -- An Egyptian court has sentenced the leader of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood and hundreds of supporters to death, state television said Monday.

Intensifying a crackdown on the Islamist movement ahead of elections next month, the same court also handed down a final capital punishment ruling for 37 others.

Charges in both cases, which were tried by the same judge, are related to violent riots in the central Egyptian city of Minya in August.

A police officer was killed during the violence, which followed a deadly crackdown by security forces on two Cairo sit-ins being held by supporters of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsy, who was ousted last July.

Mohammed Badie, the Brotherhood's leader, is among 683 supporters of Morsy whose death sentences are not final -- as the case has been referred to the nation's grand mufti, Egypt's highest religious authority, for review.

The official website of the Muslim Brotherhood said Morsy's son, Osama, attended Monday's court session. It quoted him for Badie's reaction after the death sentence was read out.

"If they hung us a thousand times God will never detract from what it is right," Badie reportedly shouted. "We will not tremble because death in the name of Allah is faith. May Allah accept."

Egypt urges 'perspective' in death sentence

Egypt sentences 529 people to death

Hundreds in Egypt face death sentence

In the second case, relating to 529 Muslim Brotherhood supporters sentenced to death last month, the judge upheld 37 death sentences. The others saw their sentences commuted to life in prison.

Most of the people sentenced are being tried in absentia. All defendants are still permitted to appeal.

In an early reaction from a Western government, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt wrote on Twitter that the mass trials were an "outrage."

"The world must and will react!" he said.

The mass trials have already drawn widespread criticism from international human rights groups.

Internal strife

Egypt has faced unending turmoil since the uprising that toppled longtime leader Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Since the army removed Morsy, the country's first freely elected leader, from power last July, Egypt has suffered the worst internal strife in its modern history. Morsy and other Brotherhood leaders were rounded up soon after his removal from office.

Cairo's military-installed government has branded the Brotherhood a terrorist group, an allegation it denies.

The Brotherhood insists it remains an entirely peaceful organization, but it is accused of being behind a wave of deadly attacks on the police and military.

A separate militant group, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which the United States has designated a terrorist group, has been blamed for attacks in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. It claimed responsibility in January for four blasts that killed at least six people in and around Cairo.

Authorities also extended a crackdown to secular activists.

Top APC Official In Ogun Beats His Mistress For Refusing To Attend Party With Him

Victoria

Bayo Awosanya, a prominent member of the All Progressives Coalition in Ogun State, has gone underground after he allegedly battered his mistress who asked to be identified simply as Victoria. According to the victim and a police source, Mr. Awosanya beat his girlfriend over her failure to join him at a social party over the weekend.
The victim, who has a child with her alleged assaulter, told SaharaReporters that she was determined to end the relationship.

Our police source said the APC official had asked Victoria to meet him at a “house warming” party, but got uncontrollably furious when he returned from the event and found her still at home. As the mistress attempted to explain her absence, Mr. Awosanya dealt her several blows to the face and head.

The victim, who showed serious head wounds, explained that she had fallen asleep after receiving Mr. Awosanya’s telephone call, waking up only after the party would have been over. Irate, the APC official reportedly pummeled her with punches before bashing her head into a glass-window steel grille, telling her it was time for her to die.

In an interview with SaharaReporters on Friday, the victim, Ms. Victoria, said she had tried to escape the assault, but Mr. Awosanya grabbed her hair weave-on and violently pulled it out. She added that the APC official was fond of physically maltreating her. Ms. Victoria stated that she could no longer remember the number of times Mr. Awosanya battered her. She told a correspondent of the website that the last beating was too gruesome because she feared he was about to kill her. She vowed to end her relationship with the politician.

She said Mr. Awosanya had given her a vicious beating in 2008, two days before their “introduction ceremony,” a prelude to traditional marriage. She explained that she had often postponed their marriage plans due to fear of the politician’s horrible temper and his possible involvement in “fetish” and a dangerous lifestyle.

Mr. Awosanya was in line to become an executive member of the APC after a party congress that held yesterday.

Ms. Victoria accused the APC politician of practicing different kinds of religions out of desperation. She added that he engages in all manner of rituals in a desperate bid to advance his political goals and financial interests.

She disclosed that Mr. Awosanya had once forced her to swear to a “fetish” oath in which she had to pledge never to sleep with another man except after his death.

Ms. Victoria disclosed that she and Mr. Awosanya have a two-year old baby named Jomiloju.

Officials of the Ogun State police command claimed that they could not find Mr. Awosanya to arrest him, but a police source told SaharaReporters that they knew the politician was in town. The source added that the alleged batterer was expected to be present at his party’s state congress where he was going to be inaugurated as the APC’s financial accountant.

“We know where Chief [Awosanya] is, but our commander doesn’t want to be involved in this palaver,” our police source said.

Abigail and Brittany Hensel are conjoined twins from Minnesota. Being conjoined, they have had many struggles throughout their lives.
Soon after they were born, doctors gave their parents the bad news; the twins would not survive very long. The girls are now 23 years old and are featured in a show, titled: Abby and Brittany, which will show viewers how their every days lives are.

#2. These girls are one of the rarest set of dicephalus twins in the world!

Abby and Brittany are one of the rarest set of dicephalus twins in the world! It is very rare to be born conjoined (1 in 40,000) and it is even more rare to survive after birth (1% of the 1 in 40,000)! The fact that Abby and Brittany are alive and well is a miracle.

Abigail-and-Brittany-worldleaks

#3. Abby and Brittany came to be when a fertilized egg failed to separate inside the womb.

They have two hearts, two spines joined at the pelvis, four lungs, two esophagi, three kidneys, one ribcage, one liver, a partially shared nervous system and a shared circulatory system. From their waist down, all organs are shared including the reproductive system, intestines and bladder. Abby, the right twin can’t feel anything on the left side of body while Brittany, the left twin can’t feel anything on her right side.
Despite the fact that the twins can only feel their half of the body they share, they still are able to type, play piano, bowl, play volleyball, ride a bicycle, play softball, and swim, etc.
They were actually born with three arms, one arm was removed surgically at the time of birth. During their life, they have been operated on several times, but the twins have remained in good health.

#4. You may have seen them before on Oprah, Life Magazine, or the documentary about them on TLC.

The twins have been in the media several times in their lives. At the age of six, they appeared in Oprah Winfrey show and on the cover of Life magazine. They stayed out of the media for 10 years, and then when they were 16 the girls were filmed for a TLC documentary. If features them passing their driver’s test; each twin controls the steering wheel with one arm. Their mother wondered which twin would get the speeding ticket if they were ever pulled over.

#5. The girls have to cordinate everything together and they don’t always have the urge to eat or sleep at the same time either.

Their parents have encouraged the twins to develop individual personalities. They have exposed the twins to the media, but have purposely kept it limited for the sake of the girls and their other 2 children.
Although the two girls are individuals and they have the urge to sleep and eat at different times, they still coordinate among themselves to work as a single body.
Clothes have to be made special order for the twins because they have 2 necklines. In order to show their own styling and tastes, the girls have leggings made with different colors on each leg. They wear different shoes on each foot for the same reasoning as well.

#6. Abby and Brittany have always been treated as two separate identities. They even buy 2 movie tickets when they go to the theater.

Their parents never thought of getting the twins separated. One of them might die or get physically handicapped for the rest of her life, so it just really wasn’t an option for them. The girls were always treated as two separate individuals.
Patty (Abby and Brittany’s mother) said “when children ask the girls if they have two heads, they say they don’t, but that each has their own head. That’s what we have encouraged them to do, to develop their own individuality as much as possible.” They buy two separate cinema tickets, separate meals and two different birthday cakes for them. When the girls were younger, they made sure to scold the right girl and not just scold them as one person.

6.-Abby-and-Brittany

#7. Since the girls are two separate people, one twin can get sick while the other stays healthy.

Abby and Brittany rarely fight (I don’t blame em’!). They eat on separate plates, with one twin holding the knife and the other holding the fork. The have to take turns eating. They alternate bite by bite, with each girl helping to feed the other. One twin will even scratch an itch for the other if the other twin’s hand doesn’t react fast enough.
One can get an illness, while the other twin stays healthy. For instance, Brittany has suffered from pneumonia twice and Abigail, the stubborn one, always helped Brittany in tough times
The twins have only once wished to separate from each other and that was when Brittany suffered for pneumonia for the first time in childhood. Abby got bored of being in the bed all the time, when Brittany was ill. She said that she needed the separation. Brittany would start crying and then Abby promised her they would never part.

Three years ago there was a rumor, in the news, about Brittany being engaged. Those were just rumors, but they made people think about their future. Now that the twins are full grown women, some questions have arose. They love each other very much, but what would happen if one fell in love, or even worse, one fell in love with someone the other twin hated? Since they share one reproductive system, will they ever have children? Their father, Mike believes that his daughters will get married someday.

New Malden deaths: Arrest after three children found dead

Gary Clarence and his two sons,
The children's father is understood locally to be called Gary Clarence

A woman believed to be the mother of three children found dead at a south-west London home has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Officers were called to a property on Thetford Road, New Malden, at about 21:30 BST on Tuesday.
A girl, aged four, and twin boys, aged three, were pronounced dead at the scene.
It is understood all three had a disability and were cared for by their 42-year-old mother Tania Clarence.
The children are believed to have been born with a life-limiting genetic condition.
Their father Gary Clarence, who works as a director at City bank Investec, was not at home at the time of the deaths but is understood to have been informed of the tragedy.
An elder child, thought to be around seven or eight years old, was also living at the house but was in good health.
On Tuesday night, a 42-year-old woman was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries and later discharged.
Police forensic officers were at the house in New Malden Police forensic officers were at the house in New Malden
She was then arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into custody at a south London police station.
Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and are currently not giving any details on the possible cause of the deaths.
Post-mortem examinations will be arranged in due course, police said.
BBC London 94.9's Jason Rosam said neighbours told him the family had recently moved into the house.
He said people in the area were "shocked and confused" by the deaths and that several evidence bags had been removed by officers from the property.
A neighbour, who did not wish to be identified, said the family were originally from South Africa and had moved into the the large semi-detached house with their four children a year ago.

Glenn Tunstall, of Kingston Police, said they were not looking for any further suspects
"They are a very, very lovely couple. I saw them all the time about with their children," she said.
She said the father works in the City and the mother is a full-time carer for her children.
They moved into the house after it underwent a "massive" refurbishment.
"She is such a lovely person," the neighbour said of the mother. "Her life revolves around the children."
Investec Bank, where Mr Clarence works as the director of investment banking for healthcare, said in a statement that the firm's thoughts were with him.
"Gary Clarence is a valued colleague and has worked with us for many years," it said.
Police were standing outside the house in New Malden Police officers have been at the property in New Malden throughout the day
"We do not know the facts at this time but our thoughts are with the Clarence family.
"We are doing all that we can to help Gary and his eldest child and ask that their privacy is respected."
According to the company's website, qualified solicitor Mr Clarence leads a team of five corporate broking specialists.
Retired nurse and health visitor Joy Devis, 86, said the news of the deaths was a "huge surprise and shock".
"They are a delightful couple, they seemed to be very happy," she said. "Their children were super, lovely children. They were very happy, there was a very nice atmosphere there."

Mrs Devis said the family had help from a nanny and a maid.
Ben Worsfold, 25, who lives in a neighbouring street, brought his son Leon, 10, and daughter Casey, two, to leave teddy bears on the driveway of the house.
He said he had struck up a conversation with Mr Clarence three weeks ago opposite the house. "He was friendly," he said.
Kingston borough commander Ch Supt Glenn Tunstall said additional officers were patrolling the area and were available for residents to talk to.

twins

A 40-year-old woman (name withheld) gave birth to conjoined twins in Abia state causing a scene at the hospital.
The woman was reported to have delivered at Mben Cottage Hospital, on Asaga road, Ebem Ohafia in Abia state.
Describing the delivery as strange, the doctor who carried out the birthing process, Benard Orji, told reporters that the mother of the twins underwent a two-hour caesarean operation.
Dr. Orji also said the woman did not register with the hospital and was not attending prenatal clinic which may have caused her twins to be conjoined.

The lord and the ring: Treasure hunter finds ring - lost for 400 years - made for the man who founded England's greatest private property empire

  • Gold 'mourning ring' was made in memory of Hugh Audley, who owned vast estates in Mayfair
  • His property eventually became the Grosvenor Estate under the Duke of Westminster, who still owns much of central London
  • Ring was found by John Reed in Norfolk using an ordinary metal detector
  • Audley gave the ring to his descendants when he died in 1662
A gold ring made by a wealthy money lender who founded the Grosvenor Estate has been found in a field by a treasure hunter.
The 24-carat piece of jewellery was a 'mourning ring' made in memory of Hugh Audley, who owned the land where Buckingham Palace would later be built.
It was found near Tibenham in Norfolk by John Reed using his metal detector, and was yesterday declared treasure trove by a coroner.

Hugh Audley was one of the most famous - and notorious - money lenders of the 17th century, and was worth the equivalent of £30million when he died.
He owned land across Mayfair, which was then on the edge of London, including the plot where Buckingham Palace would later be built.
Audley Street in Mayfair, now home to upmarket art galleries and exclusive restaurants, is named after its former landlord.
Among the businesses on the street which cater to the ultra-rich are rifle makers James Purdey & Sons and the Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant Kai Mayfair.

Audley also became sheriff of Norfolk, and owned land across the county including Old Buckenham Castle, New Buckenham Castle and Tibenham Hall.
After he died in 1662, he passed his fortune to a great-nephew, and it was eventually inherited by the Grosvenor family from which the Duke of Westminster is descended.
The Grosvenor Estate still owns swathes of central London, centred on the ultra-wealthy areas of Mayfair and Belgravia.
Audley also left a number of mourning rings to his family, like the one found by Mr Reed.

Mourning rings were usually commissioned by people coming to the end of their lives and bequeathed to their descendants in order to ensure that their memory was perpetuated down the generations.
The rings were made of precious metals and jewels, and often contained a lock of the deceased person's hair.
'According to Mr Audley's will, he had 11 rings made in two different sizes - one to fit men and the other for women,' Mr Reed said.
'I haven't heard that any of the others are in existence.'

MONEY LENDER WHO BOUGHT UP MAYFAIR WITH HIS OPULENT WEALTH

Hugh Audley (1577-1662) apparently started his career with just £100, and was worth £400,000 - the equivalent of around £30million - by the time he died.
He was known as a philosopher and a lawyer - but it was as a money lender that he made his vast fortune and won widespread notoriety.
Audley used his riches to invest in land, with his most prominent estate being the manor of Ebury in what is now Mayfair.
He bought the land from Lionel Cranfield, Earl of Middlesex, who was desperate for money to pay his debts, and after his death passed it on to his great-nephew.
The estate was then inherited by Mary Davies, who married an ancestor of the current Duke of Westminster, now one of London's biggest landowners.
Audley was buried in the Temple Church, befitting his status as a lawyer - but his death brought forward a stream of invective from those he had taken advantage of.
A pamphlet on his life entitled 'The Way to be Rich' claimed that he had lived 'a life of intricacies and misteries, wherein he walked as in a maze', while a later author wrote: 'His whole life was one of trickery and disreputable craft'.
In the Victorian era, Audley was remembered as 'a most heartless blood-sucker' and was posthumously condemned by Benjamin Disraeli.
Mr Reed added: 'I am so excited about it.
'I have found some lovely 13th-century thimbles but not something you can associate with a specific person like this.
'If I keep metal detecting for the next 20 years, I don't think I will ever find anything as good as this.'
The ring is currently being held at the British Museum, and it is not yet known what its final destination will be.

HOW AUDLEY'S LAND GREW INTO LONDON'S GREATEST PROPERTY EMPIRE

The Grosvenor Estate, which includes much of central London, is one of the largest landowners in Britain.
It is now owned by the Duke of Westminster, a member of the Grosvenor family, but it has its origins in the property owned by Hugh Audley.
The Grosvenor family inherited the Ebury estate, covering most of what is now Mayfair, Belgravia and Pimlico, via Audley's great-niece Mary Davies.

They started developing the area in the 18th century, starting with Grosvenor Square before stretching down into the areas around Eaton Square and Chester Square.
Much of the estate is named after properties owned by the Grosvenor family - for example, Eaton Square is named after their country seat of Eaton Hall in Cheshire, while Wilton Crescent is named for their relative the Earl of Wilton.
While parts of the estate have been sold off over the centuries, the Grosvenor Group still owns much of central London as well as properties in other cities around Britain and elsewhere.

Thanks to the family's extensive holdings, the current Duke of Westminster is worth £7.8billion, putting him at number eight on the Rich List - and everyone above him was born abroad.
The Grosvenors are one of the few British families to be wealthier than the Royals, but there are close links between the Duke of Westminster and the Windsors.
His son Earl Grosvenor is godfather to Prince George and his daughter Lady Tamara is married to Edward van Cutsem, a family friend of the Duke of Cambridge.
Another daughter, Lady Edwina Grosvenor is married to television presenter Dan Snow, whose father is political pundit Peter Snow.

Baby has extra limbs removed after being born with four hands and four feet in Chinese hospital

  • Child is in a stable condition at a hospital in China's Guangdong province
  • The 13-day-old boy was born joined to a headless parasitic twin
  • They weighed just over 3kg before surgery, doctors said

Doctors have successfully removed a baby's extra limbs after it was born with four hands and four feet.
The child is now in a stable condition at a hospital in China's southern Guangdong province four days after the surgery.
The 13-day-old boy, from Huizhou, was born joined to a headless parasitic twin joined at the torso on April 2. That has now been removed.

Yu Jiakang, chief surgeon at Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center said: 'They were supposed to be twins, but one had underdeveloped and became deformed.'
The conjoined twins weighed just over 3kg before surgery, with the removed parasitic foetus weighing 0.6kg.
According to the Global Times, the baby was diagnosed with pneumonia and congenital heart disease, which is common among children in China, before surgery.

His father, named only as Mr Chen, said he had taken his son to many hospitals near his home but none have been able to give him reasons for the deformity.

HOW PARASITIC TWINS FORM

Identical twins form when a single egg splits during fertilisation - as opposed to two eggs both being fertilised.
Conjoined twins form when a split egg fails to fully separate. A ‘parasite’ conjoined twin can survive but not when one absorbs the other.
In 2012 surgeons in Peru operated on a three year old boy to remove a 9in-long parasitic twin weighing a pound and a half.
In 2008 doctors had to remove a 2in embryo from the body of a nine-year-old girl in Greece.
The brain, lungs and heart are some of the last parts of the body to develop. Removing a parasitic twin is usually easier than attempting to separate conjoined twins.
Mr Chen said he blamed himself for not taking good care of his wife and son during pregnancy.
'I only cared about my work. I just thought of making money instead of taking her to hospital for a medical checkup.'
In August last year it was revealed an eight-month-old baby who grew a second 'head' had undergone surgery to have it removed.
Doctors in India said the second head was a 'parasitic twin', weighed almost a kilo and had brain tissue within it.
The child, known as Tofajjal, was suffering from a rare disease called encephalomeningocele, said to affect one in 40,000 to 45,000 babies.
A similar case happened with a baby in Pakistan two years ago.
A doctor at the National Institute of Child Health in Karachi said that the abnormal birth was the result of a genetic disease which affects only one in a million or so babies.

Boy, six, worshipped in his village as a monkey-like god because he has a foot-long TAIL (... and his family don't want to get it cut)

  • Amar Singh, six, from Uttar Pradesh, northern India, has a foot-long 'tail'
  • The boy is worshipped in his village for this 'tail' and 'cow-like' appearance
  • However, the 'tail' is not a blessing, but a result of birth defect spina bifida

An six-year-old boy has found himself worshipped in his tiny Indian village after growing a foot-long tail.
Amar Singh has a patch of thick hair on the small of his back, which has grown to more than 12 inches in length to resemble a 'tail'.
He is from Nijmapur, a small village in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, the youngest of five siblings.

Monkeying around: Amar Singh, aged six, from Uttar Pradesh, northern India, is worshipped in his village for his foot-long 'tail' which grows on his lower back

The family and locals believe that this is some kind of sign that he is connected to the Hindu god Hanuman, a monkey-like deity.
And in less-than flattering terms, the family also believes their boy looks like a cow – an animal considered holy in Hindu culture – affirmed by Amar’s interest in cows. This, they say, is further proof that Amar is a divine being.

The family say Amar was born with the anomalous patch of hair, which was about one inch in length, and then grew over the years.
They say that he is healthy and otherwise a normal boy who does well in his studies at school.
‘Amar is a very loving child,’ says his father, Ajmer Singh. ‘Everybody sees him as a symbol of god.’

Mr Singh explains that although the hairs on Amar’s back could easily be cut and shaved off,  the family are hesitant as they consider them to be a ‘gift from god’.
However, the explanation of Amar’s ‘tail’ is less blessed than the family and the village believes.
It is a result of the birth defect spina bifida, which can result in lower-back growths or, as in Amar’s case, a tuft of hair, which can grow into a tail if left uncut.
Spina bifida occurs when the spinal column does not close all of the way down – it is one of the most common permanently disabling birth defects.
The defect happens when something goes wrong during the first month of an embryo's development, meaning the spinal column doesn't close fully.

Exactly why this happens is not known, but the most significant risk factor that has been identified is a lack of folic acid before pregnancy and in the very early weeks of pregnancy.
Symptoms of the condition include learning difficulties, paralysis of the lower limbs and incontinence.
Spina bifida occulta is the least serious type of spina bifida and causes just a very small opening in the spine.
This opening tends to be covered with skin so the gap is not visible externally, as it can be with other forms of spina bifida.
However, this skin often contains a hairy patch or a birth mark.
It usually does not cause any symptoms meaning most people are unaware they have the condition.
Spina bifida affects about one child in every 2,500.

(CNN) -- The Eiffel Tower isn't the most popular place for pictures in Paris, nor is the Empire State Building the top photo destination in New York.
At least, that's the case among users of Google's geolocation-oriented photo-sharing website, Panoramio, according to Sightsmap.com, which has ranked 15,000 cities and their attractions according to photos tagged.
The result is a "heatmap" with bright areas indicating more photos.
New York tops the list as the most photographed -- or the highest Panoramio-penetrated -- city in the world.
Europe dominates the chart with eight places in the top 10.
Among them are three cities in Italy, including Rome, which ranked second.
Barcelona rounds out the top three cities, with Park Guell as its top attraction.
More photos are tagged of the Guggenheim Museum and the Tweed Courthouse than the Empire State Building in New York City, according to the poll. (Perhaps because the Empire State Building is a tougher picture to take?)
The Church of the Santissima Trinita dei Monti triumphs in Rome and the city's favorite wishing pond, Trevi Fountain, follows.
Moulin Rouge is the most Panoramio-photographed attraction in Paris -- the Eiffel Tower came fifth.
Istanbul, recently named the world's top destination by TripAdvisor, was the fifth hottest city on Sightsmap.com -- Kiz Kulesi (Maiden's Tower) is the city's top attraction.

2 Muslim Brotherhood members killed as unrest sweeps Egypt

By Mohammed Tawfeeq and Ralph Ellis, CNN
April 14, 2014 -- Updated 1013 GMT (1813 HKT)

(CNN) -- Unrest and dissension rolled across Egypt on Friday as authorities killed two Muslim Brotherhood members during a gunfight and clashed with protesters in several cities.

Egyptian security forces killed the Muslim Brotherhood members during a gunfight in the Nile Delta, north of Cairo, the state news agency MENA reported Friday.

Several men attempted to torch a traffic checkpoint and opened fire on police guarding a highway connecting the cities of Tanta and Al-Mahalla Al-Kubra in the northern governorate of Gharbiya, MENA said. One assailant was arrested, but the others escaped, the report said.

Egyptian police dispersed protests organized by supporters of former President Mohamed Morsy in various cities, arresting a number of protesters.

In Fayoum, police fired tear gas to disperse a demonstration. Police officials said they arrested five protesters, including a student, and confiscated a weapon. Seven people were injured.

Police dispersed protests in Damietta, arresting four people. Police said they confiscated knives and images of "the four-fingered sign" from protesters, a reference to the image of a yellow hand used by many Morsy supporters.

Muslim Brotherhood supporters clashed with opponents in Damietta, according to reports. A number of shop windows and one car were slightly damaged in the clashes.

Several pro-Brotherhood demonstrators were arrested during protests in the northern port city of Alexandria, security officials said.

The group said in a statement on Facebook that one protester was killed in Alexandria. However, the city's security chief, Nasser El-Abd, has not confirmed the allegation.

Security forces fired tear gas at dozens of pro-Morsy protesters gathering in the northeastern Cairo district of Nasr City and in Giza's Haram district.

In Ain Shams in eastern Cairo, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported clashes on Friday afternoon between about 300 Morsy supporters and riot police.

Protesters denounced the presidential candidacy of former military chief Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, chanting against the police and the army. The former field marshal, whose popularity has skyrocketed since he led Morsy's ouster, is expected to win the May presidential election.

Egyptian authorities have officially designated the Brotherhood a terrorist organization, accusing it of links to Islamist militants. The group denies any links to violence and insists that its means of protest are all peaceful.

Attacks targeting police and the army have spiked since the military ousted Morsy last summer amid massive nationwide protests against his rule. An ongoing crackdown on his Islamist supporters has left hundreds killed and thousands behind bars.

The government says that nearly 500, mostly police officers and troops, have since been killed in shootings, bombings and suicide attacks.

ABUJA BOMB BLAST PHOTOS] Scores Feared Dead As Bombs Go Off In Nyanya Motorpark Abuja

abujaBombBlast5
Scores of people were killed and maimed as an early morning bomb explosion rocked a motor park in Nyanya area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Monday.
Nyanya is a satellite town bordering the FCT and Nasarawa State.
The explosion reportedly occurred in a section of the park allocated to luxury buses popularly called “El-Rufa’i buses.”
Worst hit was the area where vehicles plying Abuja-Ilorin-Kabba were parked.
Workers on their way to their workplaces were most affected.
An eyewitness, who survived with a deep cut in his right leg, told our correspondent that the explosion occurred while he was calling passengers into his car. He claimed that human flesh littered his car and others around it.
A combined team of security agencies and fire fighters are currently retrieving bodies and putting out fire at the scene.
The incident had led to disruption of movement into Abuja from that area with many workers, who were on their ways to work, stranded.
The loud sound and thick smoke that characterised the explosion attracted people to the scene from neighbouring areas such as Karu, Mararaba and Masaka among others.

Italian navy rescues 730 migrants in overcrowded boats off Sicily

[File photo] Italian coast guards rescued nearly 700 people off the island of Lampedusa on October 25, 2013.

(CNN) -- The Italian navy rescued 730 migrants from overcrowded boats in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily, it said Wednesday.

The migrants, who departed in two boats from North Africa, are being taken to a port in Sicily's Agrigento province, the navy said in a statement.

Those rescued include 124 women and 29 children, it said. The overcrowded boats were losing buoyancy and the migrants were not equipped with life jackets, the navy added.

Italy is a major gateway into Europe for migrants who come by sea from North Africa in hope of reaching EU soil.

Shipwrecks off the shores of its Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Lampedusa are common, thanks to the frequent use of overcrowded and barely seaworthy vessels.

But despite the dangers, migrants keep coming.

Some of the migrants are from African nations, particularly Eritrea and Somalia, while others have fled war-torn Syria, officials say.

According to the European border agency Frontex, more than 12,000 illegal migrants were detected off Sicily and 8,000 off Lampedusa in the third quarter of last year.

Many of those arriving on Italy's shores have set sail from Libya, the agency said.

The deaths of more than 300 African migrants in a shipwreck off Lampedusa last October shocked Italy and the world, and led to calls for EU lawmakers to review their migration policies.

International organizations such as the U.N. refugee agency have called on European and other leaders to try to address the root causes of migration and to create legal alternatives to dangerous sea crossings.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The migrants were picked up from more than 40 overcrowded boats in the Mediterranean
  • About 18,000 people have arrived by sea in Italy so far this year, the UNHCR says
  • Last year, nearly 43,000 migrants reached Italy, more than a quarter of them from Syria
(CNN) -- The Italian navy has rescued about 6,000 people in the past four days from more than 40 overcrowded boats in the Mediterranean, the United Nations' refugee agency said Friday.

Its figures give a new indication of the scale of the challenge faced by Italian authorities in keeping up with the flow of migrants seeking to reach European soil.

About 18,000 people have arrived by sea in Italy so far this year, while in 2013, the number of arrivals was near 43,000, the UNHCR said. Of those who arrived last year, the largest group, more than 11,300, were Syrians fleeing the conflict in their homeland.

Of those picked up off the Italian islands of Sicily and Calabria in the past four days, a large number were women and children, including newborns and unaccompanied minors, UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said in a prepared statement Friday.

Patrolling the 'Sea of Death'

Many were fleeing violence, conflict and persecution, the statement said. The migrants, who had set off from Zwara, in Libya, in search of safety within the European Union, have now been taken to Italian ports.

The UNHCR has urged countries to work together to rescue people at sea at the same time as looking for legal migration channels that will prevent people from risking their lives at sea.

"The Mediterranean is one of the busiest seaways in the world, as well as a dangerous sea frontier for many asylum-seekers trying to find safety in Europe," the statement said.

"The challenges of protecting refugees traveling irregularly by sea in search of safety, often together with people moving for other reasons, are complex."

The agency also says that the reception centers in which asylum seekers are held after they are rescued must be adequate.

Last October, the world was shocked by the deaths of hundreds of people in shipwrecks off Italy's coasts. More than 300 died in one shipwreck alone off the tiny island of Lampedusa.
The Italian government set up a rescue operation after that tragedy, the UNHCR said, which has saved more than 20,000 people at sea.

'It's all death, but at least here it is slightly more gentle'

The flow of refugees into Lebanon from Syria has tripled the population of the frontier town of Arsal.
The flow of refugees into Lebanon from Syria has tripled the population of the frontier town of Arsal.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Lebanese town of Arsal lies just across the border from war-torn Syria
  • Since the Syrian conflict broke out, the flow of refugees has roughly tripled Arsal's population
  • A million Syrian refugees are now registered with the U.N.'s refugee agency in Lebanon
  • The U.N. says it has just $242M of the $1.89B it needs for the crisis in Lebanon alone
(CNN) -- In one of the clinics in Arsal, a young fighter asks that we conceal his identity, going simply by the name Ahmed.
Three years ago, when Syria's revolution had not yet morphed into the brutal war it is today, the 20-year-old was still in high school. His ambition in life was to be a doctor, but a year-and-a-half ago that all changed.
"We reached a point where if we don't fight, we will get killed, it was the only option," Ahmed tells us, one hand rubbing against the bandages swathed around his waist. "If I don't fight for my country then who is going to?"
Ahmed was wounded during the fighting for the town of Yabroud, just across the border.
"It's a strategic area, it's a main access route to get the wounded out and the medical and other aid in," Dr. Kasem Zein explains, as he checks Ahmed's wounds.
Pleas for mercy
In pre-revolution Syria Dr. Zein was a gastroenterologist, hardly equipped to deal with war wounds ranging from bullets to severed limbs.

IRC's plea to remember Syria's refugees
The doctor is a familiar face, known to us in the media and the world from countless YouTube videos during the fighting for the town of Qusair.
Often overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of casualties Dr. Zein would broadcast impassioned pleas for mercy, for help, but none came.
He spent more than two years apart from this family. Over the summer when Qusair, due to an influx of hardened Hezbollah fighters fell back to the regime, Dr. Zein fled to Lebanon.
"It's not just a war with weapons -- it's a war on our soul, our psyche," he says. "It's all death, but at least here it is slightly more gentle."
Increasing tensions
Arsal was once a sleepy border town tucked amidst the mountainous terrain of Lebanon's eastern frontier with Syria. The flow of Syrian refugees has seen the town's population roughly triple, makeshift camps seeping into any open space or empty lot.
Lebanon hit the one million registered Syrian refugee mark last week. The number is on track to hit 1.5 million, according to the UN.
This in a country whose own population is 4.4 million. Aid agencies can offer little. The United Nations' refugee agency, the UNHCR, says it only has $242 million of the $1.89 billion needed just for the Syrian refugee crisis in Lebanon alone.
Some towns house more Syrians than Lebanese, and while many Lebanese sympathize with the plight of the Syrians, the strain being put on this tiny nation is unsustainable and tensions are increasing.
Lives forever scarred
Arsal finds itself in the crosshairs of the Syrian war, a Sunni enclave in Lebanon's Shi'a Bekka valley -- Hezbollah's stronghold.
Hezbollah dispatched its fighters to battle alongside the Assad regime, its hardened fighters allowing the Syrian government to reclaim key towns and territory close to the Lebanese border, choking-off key supply lines for the rebels, and sending masses streaming into Lebanon.
Lives lost, lives forever scarred, a population that hardly recognizes its homeland or in many cases even itself, thrown into the midst of unimaginable violence, adapting to survive.
In one of the newest refugee camps on the outskirts of Arsal, under a rusty Ferris wheel, the youngest residents dart through large chunks of limestone. The men gather around us, angry, desperate, frustrated.
"Is this a way to live?" one man demands. "If we were animals the world would have more compassion."

(CNN) -- Honduras has the world's highest murder rate, according to a United Nations report released on Thursday.
There were 90.4 homicides per 100,000 people in Honduras in 2012, according to this year's report from the U.N. Office of Drugs and Crime.
The report analyzes the intentional homicides of about 437,000 people around the world in that year.
Honduras also topped the list in the office's last report, released in 2011.
In the Americas, homicide rates have been five to eight times higher than those of Europe and Asia since the mid-1950s, the study says, describing the phenomenon as "the legacy of decades of political and crime-related violence."
Here's a look at the U.N.'s latest tally of nations with the highest homicide rates:

15-year-old Gezi victim Berkin Elvan dies after 269 days in coma

Berkin Elvan, who has been in a coma since June 2013 after being struck in the head by a gas canister during a police crackdown on protesters, died March 11, his family announced via Twitter.

“To our people: We lost our son Berkin Elvan at 7 a.m. in the morning. Condolences to us all,” Elvan's parents said in the message.

The young teenager, the eighth person to be killed in the Gezi Park protests, went into a coma after sustaining a head injury from a gas canister as he went to buy bread during a police crackdown in Istanbul’s Okmeydanı neighborhood last June. Elvan has since become one of the prime symbols violence faced by protesters throughout the nationwide Gezi demonstrations.

He had only turned 15 in January while still in a coma. A ceremony will be held at a cemevi in Okmeydanı before the burial in Feriköy cemetery on March 12.

Scores of people gathered in front of the hospital where Elvan was convalescent for over nine months, in a show of solidarity with the family upon calls on social media.

Tension rose between a group of demonstrators and the police, which again resorted to tear gas regardless of the fact that the hospital's entrance was nearby.

“Riot police arrived in front of the hospital as the funeral was ongoing to be sent to the forensics department. Some people also went that way and protested against the police. A scuffle occurred. The police officers did not restrain themselves at all from using gas. They once again used disproportionate force,” said Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) Istanbul lawmaker Melda Onur, who was participating in the vigil. "Tear gas even entered inside the hospital," she added.

Onur also said a child was brought into the hospital after being injured due a tear gas canister.

Another man, who was going to the hospital to visit his sick wife, was also injured after being hit in his head by a tear gas canister.

Tributes also poured in under the hashtag #BerkinElvanÖlümsüzdür ("Berkin Elvan is immortal").

Dozens of protests are planned in cities around the country for this evening.

'PM Erdoğan took my son away'

The teenager’s parents were shattered when they joined activists keeping vigil for Berkin.

“It is not Allah who has taken my son away. It is [Prime Minister Recep] Tayyip Erdoğan,” said the mother, Gülsüm Elvan.

Erdoğan had memorably praised police for “heroic action” during the Gezi resistance last June, despite the murdered victims and serious injuries sustained due to the repeated brutal crackdowns on protesters.

The mother of Ali İsmail Korkmaz, a 19-year-old protester who died after being beaten during the Gezi protests in Eskişehir by a group of men including plainclothed police officers, came to the hospital to offer her condolences to Elvan's family.

Lawyers representing the family had said Elvan’s condition worsened over the last week, with his weight dropping to 16 kilos from 45 kilos.

Elvan suffered an epileptic fit on March 6, his heart stopped a day later, and on March 9 doctors diagnosed an air pocket in his lungs.

her condolences to Gülsüm Elvan.
“His young body resisted for 267 days against the damage caused by the gas canister fired by the police, the same way our people resisted against fascism. But that resistance has been decreasing gradually and the damage to his inner organs is growing due to the fact that his brain functions are very low," a statement from the lawyers released on March 9 said.

In a first for a government official, President Abdullah Gül had contacted the family on March 10 as a police intervention was ongoing against a vigil held in front of the hospital in Istanbul’s Okmeydanı neighborhood.

Gül expresses condolences

Gül has publicly expressed his condolences after Elvan's death March 11. "He was only fourteen when the incident happened. I share the family's sorrow," Gül said.

A top business officials also expressed "deep regret" over the death.

"Nothing is more important than the life of a 15-year-old boy and other young people who we lost during the Gezi incidents," Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD) Chair Muharrem Yılmaz said in a written statement.
